Weeks Away and Weeks Off

Two weeks in Door County, and the week prior, were enough to set me back a wee bit. DC week 1 was good, in terms of training, with on-location training pals Peanut and Jelly to push the motivation. The week prior was spent packing, and DC week 2 was just full of laziness, a busted tire, and no close swim location. I effectively took a week off, and then some. Take a look at the Google Calendar and you'll see what was done, and what wasn't--lots of skips there. Below are the planned totals for each of the three weeks and what was actually accomplished.

Prelude: June 16-22
Expected S: 3250 Completed S: 1250
B: 55 B: 28
R: 17 R: 8.28

DC Week 1: June 23-29
Expected S: 2000 Completed S: 800
B: 35 B: 31
R: 16 R: 13

DC Week 2: June 30-July 6
Expected S: 1500 Completed S: 0
B: 40 B: 0
R: 14 R: 1.5

With just under 3 weeks until Bix, 4 weeks until Crossroads, and 7 weeks until Chicago, I've got my work cut out for me. No problem.

Training Starts NOW!!!

Ok, it is time to start our engines and hit the water, dust off the bikes, and get those running shoes laced. The best thing we can do for training will be to come up with common schedule or similar goals in which we can report back to the group on a weekly basis. This will help each of us stay on track and strive for a common goal.

Protocol:

Decide on Training Schedule
Make Your Own Personal Goals
Log in your Performance Every Sunday

I was exposed to multi-sport events about eight years ago after being recruited as a volunteer during the fledgling years of the Quad Cities Triathlon, a local sprint distance race organized by one of my high school friends. I was involved with setting up and tearing down the transition area on the day of the race. I eventually participated as the swimmer on a three-person relay team instead of volunteering, and a couple years later I completed my first solo triathlon. That year, 2005, was a transition year for me as I was coming off a series of injuries from the previous year’s running season, including plantar fasciitis, and injuries to my hamstring, IT band and hip flexor. My goal in 2005 was to stop racing and just participate in some events. That led to training (kind of) and completion of one duathlon and two triathlons in 2005. After spending the next couple of years focusing on running only, I’m now ready, thanks to Paul, to get into multisporting again.

I have put together a decent training program that combines an international distance triathlon plan with a novice marathon plan. I have booked the Quad Cities Triathlon (sprint distance) on June 14th, Bix 7 (7 mile road race) on July 26th, Accenture Chicago Triathlon on August 24th, and plan on either the Quad Cities Marathon or Half-Marathon (pending training) on September 28th. I’m sure I’ll drop into a few other shorter road races along the way, and there is another local triathlon and also duathlon in August that I may use as training days if I can.

My training history typically involves missing almost half of the prescribed work outs. This is mainly because balancing family and work life leaves little time for total dedication to working out, considering triathlon training plans include workouts 6 days a week, twice a day for three of those days. The result is that I don’t finish well in my age group, and I don’t really care. After those 2003-2004 seasons of injuries, all I really care about is staying in shape, working to a goal, and not getting hurt.

Best of luck to everyone on their journeys this summer!
